The race to replace Teresa Paiva Weed at the State House became even more crowded on Friday.
By 4 pm on Friday, the deadline for candidates to file the declaration of candidacy paperwork, four Democrats, two independents and a Republican filed the appropriate paperwork needed to run for the Senate District 13 (Newport, Jamestown) seat.
Among the Democrats, and those who announced they were running more than a month ago, are David Allard, Dawn Euer, David Hanos and John Florez. Hanos has officially picked up the endorsement of the Senate District 13 Democratic Committee and has told What’sUpNewp that he also picked up the endorsement of former Senate President and Senator Teresa Paiva Weed.
Michael “Mike” Smith, who announced more than a month ago he would be running, also successfully filled out his paperwork to run as a Republican.
Newcomers to the race is one Independent candidate, Kimberly Ripoli and a Independent Green Party candidate, Gregory Larson. Unlike the rest of the candidates, neither made an official announcement before filling out their declaration of candidacy.
All 7 candidates are Newport resident.
The 4 Democrats will face off in a primary on July 18th. The winner of that race will face off versus Ripoli, Larson and Smith on August 22nd in a Special Election.
What’sUpNewp will host a Candidate Forum on Monday, July 10th at 5:30 pm at Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center. The event is free and open to the public, those interested in attending can register here.
Teresa Paiva Weed’s last Senate session as Senator of District 13 (Newport, Jamestown) was on Thursday, she will be officially resigning her seat on Friday, March 31st.
