Veterans – Our relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers who committed to a cause larger than their own and accepted the challenge to defend our Nation.
On this Veterans Day and everyday, we salute our Veterans and extend our gratitude for their service, dedication and sacrifices.
Here is a list of public events happening on this Veterans Day;
Friday, November 11th
9:00 a.m. – Portsmouth Ceremony
Hosted by American Legion Post 18 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5390 and their auxiliaries at Portsmouth Town Hall, this event will have a theme of “Wellness Through Alternative Therapy.” Donations of canned fruit or boxed regular or sugar-free hot cocoa or cider are appreciated for inclusion in Thanksgiving baskets for Operation Stand Down. Free.
11:00 a.m. – Veterans Day brunch
Enjoy a Veterans Day Brunch at the Alvaro E. Vieira VFW Post 5390 in Portsmouth. The menu includes bacon, sausage, eggs, toast, French toast sticks, home fries, homemade breads and beverages. $8 per person; children 11 and younger $4, veterans eat for free.
11:00 a.m. – Newport Ceremony
Newport’s Ceremony will take place in front of Newport City Hall and will feature the Newport Artillery Company, local veterans’ organizations, Rogers High School Army JROTC Viking Battalion, city and legislative officials. Guest speaker is Capt. Joseph D. “Doug” Noble, Supply Corps, USN. Hosted by United Veterans Council of Newport County, American Legion Post 7 (Newport) and the VFW Conover-Leary Post 406 of Newport. Free.
12:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. – Miantonomi Park Tower Veterans Day Open Tower Celebration
This 100-foot stone tower built as a memorial to veterans of World War I will be open to adults and families (children must be accompanied by an adult). The interior stone steps lead to a narrow metal staircase that ascends to the top observation deck. Located on the highest point in Newport, it affords views of Providence and Block Island on clear days. Free. 845-5800; cityofnewport.com.
