RIMTA to Honor Newport Shipyard with Annual Anchor Award
Newport Facility Recognized for Positive Impact on State’s Marine Trades

The Rhode Island Marine Trades Association (RIMTA) will present its annual Anchor Award to Newport Shipyard to recognize the role this company has played in transforming a part of Newport’s waterfront into a world-renowned shipyard and creating a significant impact on the state’s marine trades.

The Anchor Award will be presented during RIMTA’s Annual Industry Partnership Breakfast, which takes place on Saturday morning, September 17 during the Newport International Boat Show (see more details below).

“Charlie Dana and his family had the vision to transform a piece of Newport’s waterfront into a yard that is not only a mecca for competitive sailors and superyachts from around the world, but also a destination for boaters and a magnet for marine-related businesses,” said Wendy Mackie, CEO of RIMTA. “The Shipyard is the very best example of how a small group of individuals built on the history and heritage of boating in our state to become a major economic engine for our region.”

Charlie Dana, managing partner of Newport Shipyard, and his family and team members will be at the breakfast to accept the award.

At the breakfast, RIMTA will also recognize recent graduates of the Marine Trades & Composites Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program. This seven-week program, which is funded by Real Jobs Rhode Island, has proven to be a successful model in drawing talented entry-level workers to the marine and composites industries. A list of graduates and hometowns is below.

September 17 also marks the launch of a new group called RIMTA Future, at an evening kick-off party to be held at the boat show under the Bohlin Tent (6:30 to 8:30 pm). RIMTA Future, or RIMTAF, is an initiative of early- to mid-career industry professionals who have banded together to encourage their peers to remain actively engaged in the state’s marine trades. The group will also plan professional development activities to cultivate the next generation of industry leaders.

The Industry Partnership Breakfast is an annual RIMTA tradition that draws industry peers together on the busiest day of the Newport show to celebrate accomplishments and share information on developments in the marine trades. More details are below.
