Portsmouth, RI – George W. Glover, LCDR USN Retired, of Portsmouth, RI, died July 14, 2016, at the Village House Nursing Home, in Newport, RI.
Born in Akron, OH on November 23, 1925, he was the son of the late Charles C. and Blanche A. Glover.
He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years Frances M. Glover.
He was a career naval officer for 20 years, retiring in 1963. He entered the navy through the V-12 program after graduating from Parkersburg High School in West Virginia. He attended Bethany College and the University of Richmond and was commissioned from the Midshipman School at Northwestern University. He later attended the Naval Line School in Newport and the University of Virginia and University of New Hampshire.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His afloat tours included USS LEYTE(CV-32), USS VALLEY FORGE(CV-45), USS O’BANNON(DDE-450), USS POCONO(AGC-16) and USS ALLAGASH(AO-97). During the Korean War he served in Task Force 77 and later participated in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Following his military retirement, Mr. Glover entered the financial planning field and was associated with several national firms. In 1971 he founded Ocean State Securities, Inc., an NASD member firm, and was the president and registered principal of that firm until July 2008.
He leaves a daughter Christine L .Cotta and her husband Richard, a son George D. Glover and a daughter Carolyn M. Hilton and her husband Michael and four grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, July 18, 2016, from 4-7pm in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at 10:00AM, in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Burial to follow in St. Mary’s Churchyard in Portsmouth will be private.
