Veterans – Our relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers who committed to a cause larger than their own and accepted the challenge to defend our Nation.

On this Veterans Day and everyday, we salute our Veterans and extend our gratitude for their service, dedication and sacrifices.

Here is a list of Veterans Day public events in and around Newport, RI this week.

1 – Veterans Day Ceremony

Wednesday, November 11th at 11 a.m. in front of Newport City Hall

The Annual Veterans Day Ceremony in front of Newport City Hall will feature the Newport Artillery Company, local veterans’ organizations, Rogers High School Army JROTC Viking Battalion, city/ legislative officials and Guest speaker Capt. Francis Molinari, Chief Of Staff of the Newport Naval War College.

In case of inclement weather, the event will move to the Newport Police Department’s Assembly Room.

2 – Miantonomi Park Tower Open The Public In Honor of Veterans Day

Wednesday, November 11th from 12:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.

This 100-foot stone tower built as a memorial to veterans of World War I will be open to adults and families for free on Veterans Day. The interior stone steps lead to a narrow metal staircase that ascends to the top observation deck.

3 – Blue Star Families 

Wednesday, November 11th at 9 a.m. at Portsmouth Town Hall

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4390 and their auxiliaries will host “Blue Star Families” with keynote speaker Master Sgt. Lenny S. Vasques, USMC, a Purple Heart Medal recipient who has served three combat deployments.

Program starts indoors then moves outdoors for a wreath laying and the playing of “Taps.” Attendees are asked to bring gently used coats or new hats and gloves to donate to Operation Stand Down’s Winter Coat Program.

4 – Benefit Concert For Homeless Veterans

Wednesday, November 11th from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

The Larry Brown Swinglane Orchestra will perform a benefit concert for homeless Veterans of Rhode Island on Veterans Day.

5 – Art After Dark

Thursday, November 12th from 5pm – 10pm at Newport Art Museum

The free evening will feature special early guided tours of the Newport Art Museum for children and late night Insomniac Tours for adults, live music, chefs offering tastings, a cash bar and much more.

Veterans and active military, military card holders welcome to one free specialty drink.

Belmore visits Newport every couple of weeks to support the 12+ paid contributors What'sUpNewp has on the ground across Rhode Island, a place he called home for 39 years.

Belmore is a member of Local Independent Online News (LION) Publishers, Society of Professional Journalists, and the North American Snowsports Journalists Association.

In 2020, Belmore was named Member of the Year by LION and won the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County's Dominque Award.
