Statement from Newport Police Department on Tuesday, September 22nd;
The Newport Police Department is confirming that there was in fact a double shooting this morning just before 2:00 a.m. We would like to ensure that the public is aware that this was an isolated incident between two individuals that were known to each other.
From what we’ve learned both parties had been out during the evening and were walking back to the 35 years old suspect’s residence when a verbal argument ensued. It quickly escalated to a physical struggle where a firearm was brandished by the victim, identified as a 48 year old white male, who was subsequently subdued by the suspect. At some point the Suspect brandishes his own firearm and fires one shot to the victims head. The suspect then immediately proceeds to turn the firearm on himself causing a self-inflicted gun-shot wound to the head. Both parties were transported to Newport Hospital where the victim was pronounced dead. The suspect was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries at 6:44 a.m.
The Newport Police Department would like to reassure the public that there is no threat to the general public.
