Newport Restaurant Group will open a restaurant in the former Applebee’s space at Garden City Center, the employee-owned company’s 19th location and its second at the Cranston shopping center, according to the company.
The 5,000-square-foot restaurant at 24 Midway Road will feature a concept the company says is still in development. Newport Restaurant Group has operated Avvio Ristorante at Garden City Center since 2016.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring our brand of hospitality to this space,” Mick Lamond, the company’s CEO, said in a statement. “We look forward to adding to Garden City’s vibrant dining scene, and as an employee-owned company, we’ll be adding dozens of meaningful jobs in the community.”
Susan Walsh, Garden City Center’s general manager, said in a statement that the addition of “another locally rooted, chef-driven restaurant” strengthens the center’s dining lineup.
Newport Restaurant Group is 100% employee-owned. Its Newport County restaurants include Castle Hill Inn, The Mooring, 22 Bowen’s, Bar ‘Cino, La Vecina and Smoke House in Newport, J.T. Commons in Middletown and the Boat House in Tiverton. The company also operates Celeste in Narragansett, Waterman Grille and Hemenway’s in Providence, Iron Works in Warwick, and locations in Millbury, Wellesley, Brookline, Watertown and Westwood, Massachusetts.
Garden City Center, owned by Massachusetts-based WS Development, encompasses 545,000 square feet of retail and office space with more than 100 tenants.
The company did not say when the restaurant would open.
