Bike Newport’s 10-Spot Ride returns Saturday, Aug. 29, and tickets remain available for the 5½-hour citywide ride connecting 10 locations, 20 live music acts and 16 chefs and restaurants.
The locations stay secret until event day. Riders choose their own route and visit as many of the first nine stops as they like before everyone converges on the 10th Spot — a first for the event — for a closing celebration.
The finale features indie rockers Leaving Irene with a guest appearance by Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, the session guitarist whose credits include work with James Taylor, Carole King, Don Henley and Jackson Browne.
“It’s definitely a unique and wonderful way for people to experience the City by the Sea,” said Tuni Schartner, Bike Newport’s director of partnerships and philanthropy.
Executive Director Bari Freeman said the day works on two levels. “Participants have a great time experiencing all kinds of properties, hearing lots of live music, eating delicious food, and it’s all by bike,” she said. “When people experience Newport this way, they discover how enjoyable it can be to get around by bike — and get a glimpse of what a more bike-friendly city can feel like.”
Newport Mansions is the presenting sponsor. Kevin O’Leary, marketing director for the Preservation Society of Newport County, tied the partnership to sustainability, saying encouraging visitors to see Newport by bike cuts emissions and eases seasonal congestion.
