Newport firefighters responded to a rooftop fire at the Brenton Hotel on Friday night after a chiminea-style fire pit malfunctioned, closing part of America’s Cup Avenue and prompting the evacuation of the hotel.
The hotel announced the reopening in a video posted online Saturday afternoon, thanking A1 Roofing & Construction for getting the space back up and running.
Newport Fire Alarm received the call at approximately 9:17 p.m. and dispatched companies from all three city fire stations a minute later. Crews arrived at about 9:20 p.m. at 31 America’s Cup Ave., where Car 2 established Brenton Command.
Engine 1 personnel went to the roof at approximately 9:23 p.m., followed by Rescue 1 and Engine 5. Firefighters had to open multiple layers of roofing material around the fire pit to determine whether the fire had spread into the roof structure. Crews put a 2½-inch attack line into operation on the roof and used thermal imaging cameras to look for concealed fire, while Engine 2 personnel checked the fifth floor for extension below the roof.
Ladder 1 and Ladder 2 positioned aerial ladders at opposite corners of the building, and Engine 5 established a water supply from a nearby hydrant. Because large-diameter hose crossed America’s Cup Avenue, the road was temporarily closed near Long Wharf.
By approximately 9:29 p.m., every available Newport company was committed to the incident. Apparatus and personnel from Naval Station Newport, Jamestown and Middletown responded to Newport Fire Headquarters to cover the rest of the city. Newport Police evacuated the hotel and managed traffic.
The Newport Fire Marshal arrived at approximately 9:45 p.m. Brenton Command declared the fire under control at 9:54 p.m. Firefighters stayed to complete overhaul and confirm no fire remained hidden in the roof or interior. Guests were allowed back into their rooms. The Providence Canteen responded to provide rehab support for firefighters.
Command was terminated at approximately 10:34 p.m. The Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate.
The department credited Newport Police, the Naval Station Newport, Jamestown and Middletown fire departments and the Providence Canteen with allowing Newport crews to focus on the fire while maintaining coverage citywide.
