Newport Classical Presents Free Annual Children’s Concert Featuring Frisson in Peter and the Wolf (Dorothy Shi)

Newport Classical will present its annual free children’s concert on Saturday, Aug. 15, at 4 p.m. at the Newport County YMCA, 792 Valley Road in Middletown.

The wind members of Frisson, a New York-based chamber ensemble, will perform Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” in what the organization described as an interactive, family-friendly retelling. The hour-long program is free and open to the public, and guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, according to Newport Classical.

Before the performance, children will be able to explore instruments up close during an “instrument petting zoo,” organizers said.

The program will also include George Gershwin’s “Summertime,” Henry Mancini’s “The Pink Panther Theme,” selections from Scott Joplin’s “Treemonisha” and “Maple Leaf Rag,” excerpts from Paul Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and music from “Pirates of the Caribbean” by Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer.

The concert is part of the BankNewport Community Concerts Series and is supported by Randy and Becky Johnson in honor of their granddaughter Schuyler Madison, according to Newport Classical.

Frisson is a chamber ensemble that has performed more than 100 concerts in the United States and abroad, with members who have appeared at festivals including Marlboro, Verbier, Spoleto and Mostly Mozart, and at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, according to the group.

Newport Classical, founded in 1969, presents year-round programming including its summer Music Festival, a Chamber Series, the free Community Concerts Series and music education initiatives. More information is available at newportclassical.org.
