Track 15, the food hall at 1 Union Station in downtown Providence, is welcoming two new concepts this spring after Giusto PVD and Mother Pizzeria PVD announced they will not be renewing their leases in order to focus on their Newport operations.
Mother Pizzeria’s last day at Track 15 is Sunday, March 29. Newport’s Mother Pizzeria, located at 49 Long Wharf Mall, will continue to operate. Its Track 15 space will be taken over by Grumpy Pies, a new concept from Chef Ian Cappelano, who was previously part of the Mother Pizzeria PVD team. Grumpy Pies will hold a soft opening Wednesday, April 1, with cooking demos and sampling, before officially opening April 2. The concept will serve Roman-style party pizza — known as pizza alla pala — offered whole, half and by the slice, with a rotating selection featuring domestic and European charcuterie and cheeses.
“I am excited for the opportunity to open Grumpy Pies at Track 15,” Cappelano said. “Not only does it fulfill a dream of mine, but it will showcase an underrepresented style of pizza in a vibrant space.”
Giusto PVD will close at the end of April. Newport’s Giusto at Hammetts Hotel will remain open. Its Track 15 space will be filled by a second location of Yagi Noodles, the award-winning Asian-inspired noodle restaurant from Newport co-owners Chef Basil Yu and Kodi Keith. An exact opening date will be announced, but the Providence location is expected to debut in late April. Yagi’s menu features handmade noodles made with whole wheat unbleached flour from Ground Up Grain in Hadley, Mass. Yu was nominated in 2024 as a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef in the Northeast.
“The timing could not be better for us to take advantage of this opportunity to join our friends at Track 15 and bring Yagi Noodles to a broader audience of locals and visitors to Rhode Island,” Yu said.
Track 15 owner Chris Marsella called the transition bittersweet but pointed to the deep ties connecting the restaurants.
“Kevin not only had Ian as part of his talented team at Mother here in Providence, but it was he who first introduced us to Basil almost three years ago,” Marsella said. “Only in Rhode Island can this happen.”
“It was an incredible honor to have been part of this landmark project and to bring a little taste of Newport to Providence,” said Kevin O’Donnell, chef and owner of Giusto and partner at Mother Pizzeria. “We are grateful to the Marsella family for their support throughout this journey.”
Track 15 is open Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, visit track15ri.com.
