Newport police arrested a teenage suspect Friday in connection with an assault on a special needs student at Rogers High School, authorities announced.

Capt. Joseph C. Carroll, the department’s public information officer, issued a press release regarding the arrest Friday afternoon.

Police did not immediately release additional details about the incident, including the ages of those involved, the nature of the assault or when it occurred.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Later Friday, Newport Public Schools Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain announced the district was ending the Rogers High School football season immediately and cancelling a junior varsity scrimmage scheduled for Thanksgiving Day.
