JAMESTOWN, R.I. — The body found washed ashore near Heads Beach has been identified as a white male between 60 and 70 years old, with no signs of foul play, Jamestown police said Monday.

The Jamestown Police Department, working with Rhode Island State Police, provided an update nine days after a swimmer discovered the unidentified remains on Aug. 10.

“At this stage of the investigation, there are no signs of foul play, and nothing appears suspicious,” police said in a statement released Monday.

Investigators are working to confirm the preliminary identification of the individual. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available, according to the statement from Police Chief James P. Campbell.

The original incident occurred at approximately 7:36 a.m. when the Jamestown Police and Fire departments responded to Heads Beach off Seaside Drive after a swimmer reported finding the body.

The Rhode Island State Police, Department of Environmental Management and U.S. Coast Guard were notified. The state Medical Examiner’s Office responded and took custody of the remains.

Rhode Island State Police are serving as the lead agency in the multi-agency investigation.
