The Four Hearts Foundation named Grant Dion as its first “Four Hearts Kid” during a celebration Saturday marking the organization’s first anniversary.
Dion, 8, completed chemotherapy treatments in June after a two-year battle with leukemia. The Portsmouth-based foundation created the annual designation to recognize children who demonstrate “strength, resilience, and unwavering courage,” according to a foundation statement.

“Grant and his family have shown extraordinary bravery,” said Kateri Buerman, foundation representative. The event celebrated the foundation’s playground opening one year ago.
Chris Dion, Grant’s father, addressed attendees at the Portsmouth event. “What an incredible and glorious manifestation of strength and light for our community,” he said in prepared remarks. He thanked supporters for their “profound impact, inspiration, and support” during his son’s treatment.
The celebration included presentations by local organizations including the Garden Club, Imagination Library Newport, and various food vendors. Grafik Coffee provided complimentary refreshments.
The Four Hearts Foundation supports families on Aquidneck Island by providing assistance to families in need and promoting childhood illness awareness. The organization also maintains inclusive play spaces for children.
The foundation plans to continue the Four Hearts Kid tradition annually.
Foundation officials did not specify selection criteria for future honorees or provide attendance figures for Saturday’s event.
