Newport Polo is celebrating a major milestone after Saturday’s USA vs. Italy match drew what organizers believe was the largest crowd in the organization’s 34-year history.
The July 5 match, held over Independence Day weekend, attracted unprecedented numbers of spectators to witness the highly anticipated rematch between the American and Italian teams. While final attendance figures are still being calculated, the turnout was significant enough to prompt Newport Polo to announce major changes for future seasons.
“The Italian team’s debut in 2012 was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, especially in a state with one of the largest Italian populations per capita outside of Italy,” said Dan Keating, Newport Polo Series Founder and President. “Their popularity has only continued to grow.”
The record-breaking attendance came as a result of several converging factors: perfect summer weather, peak tourism season in Newport, and the excitement surrounding the USA-Italy rivalry that has been building since the Italian team’s first appearance over a decade ago.

In response to the overwhelming turnout, Newport Polo will implement significant changes starting with the 2026 season. Select high-demand matches will be subject to attendance caps, with tickets likely to sell out through advance online sales. For events that reach capacity, the organization will discontinue on-site ticket sales at the gate.
The year-long lead time is designed to give fans adequate notice to adapt to the new ticketing system and ensure they can secure their spots for the most popular matches.
The growth has been remarkable since Newport Polo’s founding in 1992, when just 99 spectators attended the inaugural match. This season, several thousand fans have been gathering each Saturday to watch matches at the historic home of America’s First Polo Club.
Organizers are still working to determine the exact attendance figure for Saturday’s match, as they analyze numbers for children under 15 (who attend free), season passholders, and complimentary tickets distributed to local charities.
Newport Polo hosts 17 to 18 matches each season, running every Saturday from June through September. The organization continues to operate at the same historic venue that has been home to American polo for generations.
