A documentary about the first American to sail solo around the world is coming to The JPT on May 31.
“Around Alone” showcases Dodge Morgan’s 1985 voyage on American Promise, a 60-foot sloop custom-built by Ted Hood. The film gives viewers a unique look at the challenges of solo sailing, with footage from automatic cameras placed throughout the boat.
The Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean is hosting the event, which kicks off at 4:30 p.m. with a social hour, refreshments, and raffle prizes. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online.
American Promise, now owned by the non-profit, will be docked at Fort Adams during the event weekend. The boat continues its legacy as a research platform for ocean conservation work.
Want to see the famous vessel up close? Tours are available on May 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and June 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The screening lines up with Sail Newport’s Community Waterfront Day on May 31, making for a perfect nautical-themed outing.
The Rozalia Project uses American Promise as part of its efforts to clean and protect our oceans.
