Newport’s newest four-legged officer, a 10-week-old chocolate Labrador named Bo, has joined the city’s community policing unit.

Bo and his handler, Officer Nick St. Lawrence, were sworn in at Newport City Hall by Mayor Charlie Holder on Wednesday (May 14), with about 50 community members there to witness the pup’s big moment.

This young K9 is already making waves in Newport’s public schools, attending classes and meeting students. Bo’s expected to be ready for full-time duty alongside Officer St. Lawrence in about a year, once he completes his training.

St. Lawrence shared a fun fact about his new partner: “Right now, Bo’s favorite treat is raw meat.”

Local businesses are pitching in to support Bo’s training and care. Jess Geas is handling his training, while Taillia Luvera from Wag Nation in Newport is providing food and grooming services throughout Bo’s service.

After the swearing-in, Chief Ryan Duffy and other Newport Police Department members gathered for photos with Bo and Officer St. Lawrence.
