Newport Harbor

Keeping a boat in Newport Harbor is about to get easier, according to the City of Newport.

The City is set to debut a new small boat seasonal rental mooring field this summer in the Spindle Area of Newport Harbor, aiming to provide space for boats up to 26 feet in length. The new field, which is currently being installed, will feature 20 city-owned rental moorings designed to meet the rising demand for moorings in Newport Harbor.

To handle the expected demand, the City will hold a special lottery in May for all those interested in securing a spot. The lottery will be open to all, prioritizing Newport residents. While current mooring permit holders are not eligible to apply, those on the City’s waitlist can apply.

The new rental mooring field is expected to relieve some pressure on the City’s mooring fields. Given Newport’s reputation as a boating hub, the hope is that this new space will give more boaters a chance to enjoy the harbor.

The City will own and maintain all equipment in the new field. This means boaters won’t need to worry about maintaining mooring gear—something that sets this new field apart from other options around the harbor.

For those interested in applying, the cost for renting a small boat mooring will mirror the City’s current commercial rental mooring rates of $105 per foot for the season, with the rental period in 2025 running from June 15 to October 15. For those lucky enough to secure a spot, the City will offer the option to renew for additional seasons. If the program proves popular enough, the City will be looking to add additional small boat fields to other areas of the harbor in the coming years.

To apply, boaters must apply between May 1 and May 31, 2025, and include proof of current boat registration. The boat must be registered in the applicant’s name and have a maximum vessel weight of 5,500 pounds. Vessels must also meet specific size requirements: the draft may not exceed 3 feet (with the engine down, rudders, or centerboard) or 2 feet (engine up).
