Today, Congressman Gabe Amo (RI-01) announced he is seeking participation in the annual U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Art Competition from students across Rhode Island’s First Congressional district. Any high school student who lives or attends school in Rhode Island’s First Congressional District is encouraged to take part in the competition by submitting their artwork.

This year, Congressman Amo is introducing an optional theme for art submissions: Hope in the Ocean State.

“Art has the incredible ability to spark hope and inspire change. I’m thrilled to announce this year’s Congressional Art Competition for students in Rhode Island’s First Congressional District,” said Congressman Gabe Amo, a member of the Congressional Arts Caucus. “Through using this year’s theme – Hope in the Ocean State, I look forward to seeing how our state’s motto and the power of art inspires our young Rhode Island artists.”

Interested students can register for the 2025 Congressional Art Competition HERE.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 18th, 2025. Submissions will be judged through public polls on Congressman Amo’s Instagram account. The overall winner of our district’s competition will be displayed for one year in the United States Capitol as part of an exhibit that includes artwork from other districts’ contest winners.

Additional resources for interested students can be found on the Art Challenge page on Congressman Amo’s website or by contacting Erlinda Castro at erlinda.castro@mail.house.gov or by calling our District office at 401-729-5600.

BACKGROUND

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

Last year, the winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition for Rhode Island’s First Congressional District was titled “Burnout (Self-Portrait)” by Vivian Wen. A tenth-grade Advanced Placement (AP) Art student at Barrington High School, Ms. Wen’s submission was selected by a panel of three local judges out of all the artwork received.
