Rhode Island Congressman Gabe Amo (RI – District 1) is sounding the alarm on the Republican budget proposal, calling it a “reckless” plan that prioritizes tax breaks for the wealthy over the needs of working families.
In a recent newsletter to constituents, Amo, a new member of the House Committee on the Budget, warned that the GOP blueprint could lead to massive cuts to federal programs that Rhode Islanders rely on, including Medicaid, food assistance, and health insurance subsidies.
“This is not a responsible budget. It’s reckless,” Amo said. “Instead of placing additional burdens on families already struggling to afford food and health care, we should be investing in policies that lower costs, create good-paying jobs, and strengthen Social Security and Medicare for future generations.”
Amo highlighted several ways the Republican budget could negatively impact Rhode Islanders:
- Medicaid cuts: The GOP plan could slash Medicaid funding by $880 billion, putting the health coverage of 4 million Americans at risk. In Rhode Island, this could mean devastating cuts to services for seniors, low-income families, and people with disabilities.
- Higher health insurance premiums: A 60-year-old Rhode Island couple earning $82,000 a year could see their health insurance premiums increase by over $14,000 under the Republican plan.
- Food assistance cuts: The GOP budget would also slash food assistance programs by $230 billion, impacting over 40 million Americans, including approximately 34,000 people in Rhode Island’s First Congressional District.
Amo also criticized President Trump’s decision to cut funding for the National Institutes of Health, which he says would stifle medical innovation and deny Americans access to lifesaving treatments.
The Congressman pledged to continue fighting against cuts that would harm Rhode Islanders, and called on his constituents to contact their elected officials to voice their concerns.
