Newport County residents woke up to a winter scene Sunday morning as snow blanketed the area, with some spots seeing up to 2 inches.
The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, MA, has released snowfall totals for the storm that moved through the region from Saturday, Feb. 15, to Sunday, Feb. 16.
Portsmouth tops the list in Newport County, with 2 inches reported at a spot 5.2 miles south-southeast of town.
A local weather observer in Portsmouth said, “We measured 2 inches of snow at 8 a.m. Sunday.”
Middletown and Newport aren’t far behind, both reporting 2 inches as well. In Middletown, an observer 1.1 miles southwest of town recorded this at 7 a.m. Sunday. In Newport, an amateur radio operator reported the same amount 1 mile south-southwest of Newport Airport at midnight.
Jamestown and Tiverton saw a bit less, with both towns recording 1.5 inches. A weather observer in Jamestown, just 0.3 miles south-southeast of the town center, reported this at 7 a.m. Sunday.
Little Compton received the least snow in Newport County, with only 0.5 inches reported by an observer 0.6 miles east of town at 7 a.m. Sunday.
While Newport County didn’t see any freezing rain, other parts of Rhode Island weren’t so lucky. West Warwick in Kent County got 0.13 inches of freezing rain, and North Smithfield in Providence County reported 0.15 inches.
