On Thursday, September 19, 2024, Congressman Gabe Amo spoke about the destabilizing influence of Iran in the region and the urgent need for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
“For decades, support for regional proxies has been central to Iranian foreign policy. It has funded armed groups and terrorist organizations — including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen and militias in Iraq and Syria,” said Congressman Gabe Amo. “After October 7th, we have seen increased activity from Iranian proxies in the region. We need to understand the kind of support that Tehran is providing to prevent future attacks.”
During his speech, Rep. Amo also emphasized the upcoming one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on October 7, 2024, and called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire to both release the hostages and surge humanitarian aid to Gaza. He also stressed the need to further counter the growing relationship between Iran and Russia.
“I also reaffirm my support for a long-term plan — one that ensures a lasting, peaceful, two-state solution and provides self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians. An immediate ceasefire and comprehensive day-after plan are essential for containing the conflict and countering the threat of Iran and its proxies,” Amo added.
