To the Editor,

In response to the article of February 4th written by Frank Prosnitz in “Whats Up  Newp” about the Newport Performing Arts Center (NPAC), we felt some clarification would provide the community proper insight as to the full status of the project.  Specifically, it should be pointed out that although there is an annual appeal which  Mr. Prosnitz referenced in his piece, there is also an active capital campaign currently underway to complete the renovation of NPAC’s historic theater.

As reported by Mr. Prosnitz, and as available on our publicly filed tax documents, the  2023 annual fund exceeded its goal of $125,000 with a total raised of $127,820 – of which 2/3 was raised within two months. These funds are earmarked to support the necessary staff and volunteers dedicated to completing the capital campaign while also maintaining the building in its partially completed state. We all know it takes money to raise money – and we are thankful that the greater Newport community has so definitively responded to our effort to raise these needed funds.

Without a doubt, raising funds for the capital campaign is a big challenge, but it certainly can be met — resulting in a beautiful civic performing arts facility to benefit the entire community.

To help clarify the status of the project:

● Almost $8 million of critical structural work has been completed to date. ● The capital campaign has restarted with the assistance of an expanded board and a capital campaign consultant.

● Capital campaign pledges to date are approximately $5 million with the aim of reaching $23 million by the end of 2024.

● Construction will not restart until all funds are in place to complete the entire project.

● We have a completed operating plan which confirms the programmatic opportunities and economic sustainability of NPAC.

Bringing a project of this scale to life is demanding and all-consuming work. What is important is that a volunteer board has re-engaged with this project to make it happen. During our planning study in which we assessed the community’s interest and capacity to support the project, we obtained strong affirmation that the community wants this to happen and has the capacity to make this happen.  Newport is ready for a state-of-the-art performing arts center. Locals and visitors alike will benefit by having access to even more quality performances and engaging experiences. Local students will have the opportunity to gain first-hand connections to the performing arts and local performing arts organizations will have a permanent  700-seat venue for their audiences to enjoy their talents throughout the year. The  Newport Performing Arts Center on Washington Square is needed and will be a  magnificent part of our community. Work with us to get to opening night!

The Board of Directors, NPAC
