Yacht captains and crews will race fiberglass pumpkins across the basin at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard on Friday, Oct. 16, in the shipyard’s annual Pumpkin Regatta, with proceeds benefiting Sail Newport.
The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. and is open to participants and spectators for $25 each, according to the shipyard. A Mano Pizza will serve food, with beverages donated by sponsors including Newport Yacht Builders, Casey’s Oil & Propane and Newport Rigging Group.
Teams compete in a relay-style race across the shipyard’s “Main Street” basin, with prizes for fastest team and best costumes. Teams may race more than once to improve their times. Last year’s winners are expected to return to defend the title, according to the shipyard.
The regatta started more than 14 years ago and benefits a different organization each year. Shipyard staff organize it, painting three fiberglass pumpkins, arranging food and beverages, and soliciting sponsors and silent auction items. More than 125 people attended last year and raised more than $7,500, according to Michael Millerick, the shipyard’s general manager.
“The energy around the Pumpkin Regatta is always lighthearted and festive, which is a nice outlet for captains and crew who are often working long days getting ready for their return to warmer climates,” Millerick said in a statement.
This year’s proceeds go to Sail Newport, the public sailing center at Fort Adams State Park.
“Many think the America’s Cup is the pinnacle in the yachting universe. Those people have never experienced a Pumpkin Regatta at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard,” Brad Read, Sail Newport’s executive director, said in a statement. “These teams prepare all season to make sure they have the best costumes or the best tactics to either tip their competition’s pumpkin over or paddle their way to victory!”
A silent auction and direct donations will also be available during the event. Businesses donating products and overnight stays include The Brenton Hotel, CK Bradley, Clarke Cooke House, Gold’s Wine and Spirits, Newport Marriott, Monelle Newport, Newport Mansions, Onne van der Wal Photography & Video, Big Weather Gear and Safe Harbor Marinas.
