Counted Out investigates the biggest crises of our time through an unexpected lens: math. (NPEF)

The Newport Public Education Foundation will host a free community screening of the documentary “Counted Out” on Monday, Nov. 2, at 6:30 p.m. at Rogers High School, with a discussion afterward.

The foundation and Newport Public Schools will also use the evening to announce a new initiative aimed at changing how math is taught in the city’s secondary schools, according to NPEF.

The film follows a third-grade classroom, a middle school classroom, high school students and adult community members, asking who has access to the math needed to thrive and who is being left behind, according to the foundation. It also examines mathematical literacy as a foundation of a healthy democracy — understanding numbers, questioning data, and recognizing how math is used and misused.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to all, and the film will be presented with Spanish subtitles. Registration is encouraged through NPEF.

The screening is supported by the RI Education Collective, the League of Women Voters of Newport County, newportFILM, RENEWport and Newport Public Schools.
