Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead, Massachusetts, leads the Resolute Cup with one day of racing remaining, according to results released Friday by the New York Yacht Club.
The two-time defending champion scored 13 points over four races Friday and has 31 points, with an average race finish of 2.8. Corinthian won the event in 2022 and 2024.
Eastern Yacht Club, also of Marblehead, is second with 36.4 points after receiving redress for an equipment failure in Friday’s second race. San Diego Yacht Club is third with 38.
Annapolis Yacht Club had the best day of any team, scoring 12 points over four races. Annapolis and Bayview Yacht Club of Detroit both carry a 4.2 average. Teams are ranked by average race score because, after 18 races, half the boats have sailed 13 races and the rest 14.
Among local entries, the host New York Yacht Club is 10th with 78 points and Conanicut Yacht Club of Jamestown is 12th with 102.
Friday brought the strongest wind of the regatta. The New York Yacht Club said a building southerly peaked in the high teens and was met later in the day by a strong ebb tide, producing short, steep chop that caused a few breakdowns.
“It was the windiest we’ve seen, and the current shifted about halfway through the day,” said Will Holz, skipper of the Chicago Yacht Club team, which closed the day with a second and a first and sits eighth. “It was tough out there, really hard driving.”
Bill Lynn is sailing for the New York Yacht Club with his son Peter, who is driving the boat, while his daughter and son-in-law are sailing for Eastern Yacht Club.
“It’s fun for me, especially, because I get to sail with and against my kids,” Lynn said.
The race committee plans two full-fleet races Saturday. The top half of the fleet will then sail up to three double-point medal races to decide the champion. No scores will be dropped from the medal race series.
Saturday’s forecast calls for sunny skies, temperatures in the 60s and northeast wind at 9 to 11 mph, according to the club.
The Resolute Cup, first sailed in 2010, is a championship for U.S. yacht clubs and the only guaranteed pathway for an American club to earn a berth in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. This year’s regatta, the eighth edition, runs Sept. 28 to Oct. 3 at the club’s Harbour Court in Newport and is sailed in the club’s fleet of Sonars.
