The Jane Pickens Theater has three cult film nights left in September, each built around something more than a screening.
“The Road Warrior” plays Thursday, Sept. 17, at 8:30 p.m. in a 4K restoration from Warner Bros., part of the theater’s Cult Classic Collection. George Miller’s 1981 film sent Mel Gibson’s Max across the Australian outback in what became one of the most imitated action films ever made, and it’s the first of the three to run on the JPT’s new projector.
The Big Lebowski Party returns Thursday, Sept. 24. Los Duderinos play at 7 p.m., with the film at 8 in a 4K DCP and a 15-minute intermission between. There’s a pre-film Narragansett Beer tasting and a costume contest open to any Lebowski character — Dude, Walter, nihilist — with raffles and giveaways through the night. Newport Cannabis Company sponsors, and What’sUpNewp is a presenting partner.
“Miller’s Crossing” closes the month Tuesday, Sept. 29, as part of the theater’s Noir Avec Noir series. The Rhode Island trio Fáilte plays traditional Irish music at 6:30 p.m., and the lobby hosts a tasting of three rotating Pinot Noirs. The Coen brothers’ 1990 Prohibition gangster film stars Gabriel Byrne, with cinematography by Barry Sonnenfeld and a score by Carter Burwell.
