Newport Hospital has become the first in Rhode Island to use the da Vinci 5, the newest version of Intuitive’s robotic-assisted surgical platform, after a year of fundraising that covered the full cost through donations.
The system will be used for minimally invasive procedures in urology, gynecology, thoracic surgery and general surgery. It translates a surgeon’s hand movements into smaller, precise movements of instruments inside the patient, with the surgeon controlling the instruments throughout. The platform includes wristed instruments and enhanced 3D visualization.
“This milestone for Newport Hospital would not have been possible without the extraordinary generosity of our donor community,” said Dr. Tenny Thomas, the hospital’s president and chief medical officer.
Dr. James D. Valente, medical director and chair of surgery, said the technology strengthens the hospital’s ability to offer advanced minimally invasive options in a community hospital setting.
The da Vinci 5 joins the Zimmer Biomet ROSA Knee System, which the hospital uses for total knee replacements.
Newport Hospital, founded in 1873, is a 129-bed nonprofit acute care hospital affiliated with Brown University Health.
