The Newport Restoration Foundation honored two Bellevue Avenue-area preservation projects at the 20th annual Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards, held Sept. 11 at Rough Point.
Miramar received the award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. The Spouting Rock Beach Association Historic Clubhouse was recognized for resiliency and floodproofing work. Tom Perkins received the President’s Award for lifetime excellence in historic preservation.
The foundation said the sold-out ceremony produced the highest proceeds in its history, exceeded its fundraising goal and drew a record number of sponsors. Nominations also hit a record. All proceeds fund the foundation’s preservation work.
“From meticulous restoration to innovative leadership in resiliency planning, each honoree has helped advance the work of historic preservation,” said Sue Battle, the foundation’s development and donor relations manager.
Executive Director Hilary Fagan said the awards recognized Newport’s preservation champions and pointed to the organization’s work in the historic trades, tenant stewardship and community engagement.
Founded by Doris Duke in 1968, the foundation owns more than 70 historic houses rented through its tenant stewardship program and operates Rough Point and Vernon House.
