The Jane Pickens Theater is running a week of sailing and survival stories starting Friday, Sept. 11, anchored by the Rhode Island premiere of “Mighty Mary,” a documentary about the first all-women’s team to compete for the America’s Cup.
Directed by Mary Mazzio and narrated by Elizabeth Banks and Hugh Jackman, the film follows the crew, assembled partly through a New York Times advertisement, that knocked Dennis Conner’s Stars & Stripes out of contention before a backroom deal the night before a race changed the outcome. According to the film, the crew included a deaf sailor, a Native Hawaiian sailor and the first Black sailor to win an America’s Cup race, who coached the novices. It screens Sept. 11 at 5 p.m., Sept. 17 at 6, Sept. 18 at 4:30 and Sept. 19 at 5.
Cole Brauer, the first American woman to race solo around the world, appears in person Wednesday, Sept. 16, with doors at 5 p.m. and the conversation at 6, to launch her memoir “First Light.” That event is ticketed through Charter Books, with options that include a signed copy.
“76 Days Adrift” screens Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. Executive produced by Ang Lee and directed by Joe Wein, it recounts Steven Callahan’s 1982 ordeal after a whale sank his boat in the Atlantic, leaving him in a life raft for 76 days. Executive producer Robert Sennot will take questions afterward.
The week closes Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. with “In the Whale: The Greatest Fish Story Ever Told,” about Provincetown lobster diver Michael Packard, who was briefly taken into a humpback’s mouth off Cape Cod. Director David Abel will do a Q&A.
