The City of Newport will receive $70,000 in the fifth round of Learn365RI grants, part of $1.629 million awarded statewide to expand afterschool, summer and out-of-school learning programs, Gov. Dan McKee and Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green announced Friday.
Newport’s award is among the largest in the round, matched by Pawtucket, Cranston, Warwick, Woonsocket and Central Falls. Only the Providence Public School District and the City of Providence received more, at $90,000 each.
Locally, Portsmouth received $50,000, Middletown, Bristol and Tiverton each received $25,000, and Jamestown, Little Compton and New Shoreham each received $13,000. Warren also received $25,000.
The awards go to municipalities, which partner with schools and community organizations to run the programs. According to the state, Learn365RI supports academic enrichment, career exploration, mentoring, arts education, STEM opportunities, athletics and social-emotional supports.
“Learning does not stop when the school day ends, and neither does our commitment to Rhode Island students,” McKee said in a statement.
Infante-Green said partnering with municipalities and community organizations helps students access experiences that build skills and improve engagement.
Thirty-eight communities and school districts received awards in this round, ranging from $13,000 to $90,000, with amounts scaled roughly to municipal size.
