More than 1,300 Newport County residents have voted in the Sept. 9 statewide primary, a week into a three-week early voting period, according to the Secretary of State’s turnout tracker.
As of noon Thursday, 1,331 ballots had been cast across the county’s six communities — 948 in person at early voting sites and 383 mail ballots received by the Board of Elections. That is about 10% of the statewide total of 13,828.

Jamestown stands out. The island town of roughly 5,500 residents has produced 241 ballots — more than Middletown or Tiverton, both several times its size, and more than Woonsocket, a city of 43,000, which has recorded 227.
Statewide, 13,828 people have voted, or 1.7% of registered voters. Providence leads with 2,174, followed by Warwick at 916 and Cranston at 857. New Shoreham has recorded 20. Results are unofficial.
What’s on the ballot
Newport voters will see contested races at the top of both party ballots. The following reflects a sample ballot for Ward 2; legislative races vary by district.

Two candidates with Newport ties are on the statewide ballot. Former Newport Mayor Xaykham Khamsyvoravong is one of five Democrats running for lieutenant governor. A Pell Center survey released Aug. 17 put him at 16%, two points behind incumbent Sabina Matos, with 48% of likely voters undecided.
How to vote
Early voting runs through 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. In Newport, it takes place in the second-floor conference room of City Hall, 43 Broadway, during regular business hours, with emergency mail ballots available in the Canvassing Office. Voters in other communities should contact their local board of canvassers.
The city advises that after Friday, Aug. 28, voters holding mail ballots should use the official drop box in front of City Hall rather than the postal system. Mail ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on primary day at the Canvassing Office, the drop box, or a light blue receptacle at a polling place.
Unaffiliated voters may vote in either party’s primary without affecting their registration.
The primary is Wednesday, Sept. 9 — the day after Labor Day, rather than the usual Tuesday. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters can look up their polling place and sample ballot through the Secretary of State’s website.
