The Newport Restoration Foundation and the City of Newport have announced the honorees for the 20th annual Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards, recognizing two outstanding preservation projects in Newport County and a lifetime achievement honoree. The ceremony takes place Friday, September 11, at Rough Point.
Tom Perkins receives this year’s President’s Award for lifetime excellence in historic preservation and for embodying founder Doris Duke’s vision of preserving and restoring Newport’s architectural heritage.
The Excellence in Historic Preservation Award goes to the restoration of Miramar, the 1912 Horace Trumbauer-designed Gilded Age estate on Bellevue Avenue. Owners Stephen and Christine Schwarzman led the project, which drew on historical research and master artisans from the United States and France to preserve one of Newport’s most significant landmarks in the Bellevue Avenue Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.
The Resiliency Award honors the Spouting Rock Beach Association for its innovative floodproofing of the association’s circa-1939 historic clubhouse. The project integrated a dry flood-proofing system designed to protect the building — also within the Bellevue Avenue Historic District — from sea level rise, hurricanes, and coastal flooding while preserving its architectural integrity.
“For 20 years, the Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards have celebrated exemplary historic preservation across our community,” said NRF Executive Director Hilary Fagan.
