The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center has two free community events on tap next week, including a sit-down dinner prepared by Stoneacre Hospitality and a poetry and art-making workshop led by a Jamestown Arts Center resident artist.
On Tuesday, July 28, from 4 to 6 p.m., ceramic artist Kelly McDermott will lead participants through an exploratory workshop around themes of community, support, and navigating life’s challenges. Attendees are invited to bring a poem, personal story, or song to share, and to take part in hands-on artmaking. Work created or shared may be incorporated into an art installation set to go on view at the Jamestown Arts Center in late January 2027. The event is free and open to all ages.
The following evening, Wednesday, July 29, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the center will host a free community dinner sponsored by the Aramli Foundation and BedJet, with food prepared by Stoneacre Hospitality. The menu features deviled eggs, Caesar salad, chicken thighs with pan jus, braised beef bourguignon, egg noodles, creamy polenta, glazed rainbow carrots, chocolate chip sea salt cookies, and brownie madeleines. The dinner is open to anyone in Newport County on a first-come, first-served basis.
