Lynn Underwood Ceglie announced Friday morning that she is withdrawing her candidacy for re-election to the Newport City Council, ending a 12-year tenure representing the Second Ward.

“Serving the residents of Newport and the Second Ward over the past twelve years has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Ceglie said in a statement. “This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one for me and my family.”

Ceglie had filed for re-election during the three-day candidate filing period that closed June 25, and faced two challengers in the Ward 2 race: Emily Conklin and John M. Walker. Her withdrawal leaves that contest as a two-person race between Conklin and Walker, with no incumbent on the ballot.

Today is also the deadline for candidates to return signed nomination papers to the Newport Canvassing Office at 43 Broadway; papers were due by 4 p.m. The primary is September 9; the general election is November 3.
