What started as a casual Sunday tradition among friends has grown into one of Newport’s most anticipated summer fundraisers.
Seven years ago, a group of friends would gather at O’Brien’s Pub after the weekend to enjoy lobster rolls, mudslides, and good conversation. Those afternoons sparked an idea: what if they could turn that tradition into something bigger?
Today, Lobby Muddy Fest has become exactly that.
The 7th Annual Lobby Muddy Fest returns to Smugglers Waterfront Bar on Saturday, July 18, from 2 to 6 p.m., bringing together more than 600 community members for an afternoon of food, music, auctions, and philanthropy, all benefiting Newport Mental Health.
What began as a grassroots event has evolved into one of Aquidneck Island’s most energetic community fundraisers. Since its inception, Lobby Muddy Fest has raised more than $125,000 for charitable causes, with Newport Mental Health serving as its current beneficiary. Each year has built upon the last, thanks to the generosity of local businesses, volunteers, sponsors, and attendees who believe in supporting mental health close to home.
“Mental health impacts every family in some way,” said James Miller, co-founder of Lobby Muddy Fest. “We wanted to create an event where people could come together, have an incredible time, and know that every ticket, every auction bid, and every donation is making a difference for someone in our community.”
As a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, Newport Mental Health provides more than 30+ programs serving children, adults, and families throughout Newport County. From counseling and crisis intervention to substance use treatment and housing support, the organization ensures that care is available regardless of a person’s ability to pay.
“As both a director of Lobby Muddy Fest and a member of the Newport Mental Health Board of Directors, I’ve been fortunate to watch this event grow from an idea into something that creates a real and lasting impact,” said Tyler Bernadyn. “Crossing the $100,000 mark and being the Newport Mental Health gala presenting sponsor was an incredible milestone last year, but what makes us even prouder is seeing hundreds of people come together each year to support a cause that affects every one of us. That’s what community is all about.”
Admission is $75 and includes a fresh lobster roll, or a non-shellfish option, a signature mudslide or non-alcoholic beverage, an official Lobby Muddy Fest T-shirt, and a charitable donation to Newport Mental Health. Throughout the afternoon, guests can enjoy live entertainment from Never in Vegas, along with live and silent auctions featuring unique experiences, local artwork, travel packages, dining certificates, and contributions from businesses across Rhode Island.
This year’s event is made possible through the support of an incredible group of community partners. Heritage Restaurant Group returns as the Presenting Sponsor, joined by major sponsors Warwick Tree Service, House Doctor Home Inspections, and CMG Financial’s Cameron Stewart. Dozens of additional local businesses have donated auction items, sponsorships, and services, demonstrating the remarkable generosity that has become synonymous with Lobby Muddy Fest.
The celebration begins even before Saturday’s festival. On Friday, July 17, the sold-out Lobby Muddy Golf Tournament will welcome 72 golfers to Jamestown Golf Course. Sponsored by The Protective Club, the tournament has become a popular kickoff event that continues to expand each year.
Once the festival concludes, the celebration continues at the official after-party at The Lobster Bar, featuring live music from Connor Cox. The after-party is proudly hosted and sponsored by The BonRock Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization established in memory of the beloved Bonnie Kilroy. Their partnership reflects the shared commitment of local organizations working together to strengthen and support the Newport community.
To help spread the word, Tyler Bernadyn and Ben Iacoi appeared on The Rhode Show Wednesday morning to share the story behind Lobby Muddy Fest and encourage Rhode Islanders to get involved.
“We’ve already sold more than 450 tickets in advance and are expecting over 600 people on Saturday,” Ben Iacoi said. “This event has grown so quickly and organically because people love having a good time while making a difference in the lives of others. Every year we’ve welcomed new sponsors, new donors, and new attendees who believe in what we’re trying to accomplish. We’re incredibly grateful for that support, and there’s always room for more people to join us.”
While Lobby Muddy Fest has grown substantially over the past seven years, its mission remains unchanged: bringing people together for a purpose. Every ticket purchased, every sponsorship secured, every auction item donated, and every volunteer who gives their time helps ensure that Newport Mental Health can continue providing life-changing care to individuals and families throughout our community.
In a world where mental health has never been more important, Lobby Muddy Fest serves as a reminder that meaningful change often begins with something simple: neighbors coming together to support one another.
