Tiverton won its second consecutive softball state championship, beating Rogers 5-2 in the Rhode Island Division 3 final at Rhode Island College on Sunday, June 7.
Liliana Luis pitched a complete game for the Tigers, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out eight. Tiverton built the lead early, scoring in the second and third innings and adding two more in the sixth.
Lia Doster led Tiverton at the plate with two hits, and Lucy Stearns drove in two runs with a hit. Several other Tigers chipped in hits in the win, which capped an 18-2 regular season for coach Mike Brigham’s club.
For Rogers, sophomore pitcher Lila Leys reached a career milestone, recording her 200th strikeout of the season and her 300th career strikeout. Tess Margolis, Jazelle Ramos and Emma Brown each had a hit to lead the Vikings offensively. Rogers entered the final at 16-2 on the season.
Both teams scored twice over the middle innings before Tiverton pulled away late to secure the repeat title.
