Lieutenant Gov. Sabina Matos announced Monday that her re-election campaign has been endorsed by the Rhode Island Building and Construction Trades Council, which represents 16 affiliated unions and thousands of skilled tradespeople across the state.
“I am proud to continue my long-standing partnership with the Rhode Island Building and Construction Trades Council and thank them for their support,” Matos said. “Since my early days as President of the Providence City Council, I have fought to make sure that working people are treated fairly, have good wages, strong benefits, and safe job sites.”
Michael F. Sabitoni, president of the council, praised Matos as an advocate for working families. “As lieutenant governor, Sabina has continued to be a fierce advocate for working families, championing policies that make Rhode Island more affordable and strengthen economic opportunity for all,” he said. “Sabina Matos has earned the trust of Rhode Islanders through her leadership, dedication, and proven record of service, and she has earned four more years as our lieutenant governor.”
The endorsement adds to Matos’ support from organized labor, following the backing of the United Food and Commercial Workers last month.
Matos faces a crowded field in 2026. She is being challenged in the Democratic primary by Providence City Councilor Sue AnderBois, former state Sen. Cynthia Coyne and former Newport Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong. The winner of the Sept. 9 primary is expected to face former state Rep. John Loughlin, the lone Republican candidate so far, in the Nov. 3 general election.
Matos, who has served as Rhode Island’s lieutenant governor since 2021, previously served on the Providence City Council, including as its president.
