Newport City Councilwoman Ellen Pinnock announced she will run for a second term representing Ward 1.
Pinnock said advocating for young people has been central to her work on the council. During her first term, she said she pushed for expanded recreation opportunities, stronger connections between the city and its schools, safer spaces for children and investments to support families.
“Anyone who knows me knows that advocating for young people is at the center of everything I do,” Pinnock said in her announcement. “I believe the way we care for children says everything about who we are as a city.”
Pinnock said she advocated for projects including a splash pad and supported a food pantry trailer at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in the city’s North End. She said she has worked to clean up the North End, advocated for traffic-calming measures and pushed for youth voices to be included in decisions about housing, transportation, recreation and education.
“Throughout this term, I’ve worked to bring the voices of students, renters, working families, longtime residents, and communities too often left out of the conversation into the rooms where decisions are made,” she said.
Pinnock said she is seeking a second term because she believes the city needs leadership that listens and builds trust through relationships.
“This community is my heart,” she said. “And I will continue fighting for a Newport where every person, especially every child, has the opportunity to thrive.”
