Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore and the RI250 Commission on Wednesday officially launched Play Ball for RI250, a statewide initiative linking youth baseball and softball with Rhode Island’s Semiquincentennial commemorations ahead of July 4, 2026.
The kickoff event was held at the Kimberly Ann Rock Complex in Rumford and brought together Little League players, coaches and families from Rumford, Barrington, South Kingstown, Darlington, Elmwood and King Philip little leagues. Rumford Little League, one of several leagues celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, hosted the event.
“Baseball is America’s pastime, and ballfields around our state are hubs of community building and civic engagement,” Amore said. “I’m proud to support this initiative and our work to bring RI250 commemorations to Rhode Islanders of all ages and interests.”
The initiative is designed to meet Rhode Islanders in the places they already gather, using youth sports as an entry point for civic engagement and local celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. As part of the effort, leagues across the state received branded RI250 banners to hang on field fences throughout the season.
The event also featured a ceremonial first pitch and an appearance by Newport Gulls mascot Gully Jr., who handed out tickets to games at Cardines Field.

East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva, whose city is home to Revolutionary War-era burial sites, spoke at the event alongside Rumford Little League President Michael Fisher.
“What better way to celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary than celebrating America’s Game, and connecting community pride with our city’s youth,” DaSilva said.
RI250 plans to continue partnering with leagues statewide through the spring, incorporating commemorative materials and recognition into local Opening Day ceremonies and games.
