A Newport Scout has achieved Scouting’s highest honor after leading the restoration of a weathered bridge at the Norman Bird Sanctuary.

Ethan Hoag of Scouting America Troop 3 Newport completed his Eagle Scout Service Project by rebuilding the Shady Glade Bridge, a popular feature along one of the sanctuary’s trails that had become unsafe over time.

Hoag led a team of volunteers in the restoration effort, working closely with sanctuary staff to select mahogany wood that would blend with the natural landscape. The rebuilt bridge features sturdy mahogany supports with secure footings and new railings.

“I have wonderful memories of time spent at the bird sanctuary and they’re such an important part of the community,” Hoag said. “I wanted to do something to benefit them.”

Troop 3 Newport, founded in 1947, is part of the Narragansett Council and has guided more than 100 Scouts to the rank of Eagle Scout over its history. The troop serves boys and girls ages 11–17 and meets Monday evenings during the school year.
