The city has extended the deadline for residents and business owners to clear their sidewalks until daylight hours Tuesday as crews continue working to clear streets from the winter storm.

Newport’s Public Services team worked a full day and night Sunday and will continue clearing streets throughout Monday and overnight, according to a press release from the city.

The parking ban remains in effect until 9 p.m. Monday. Cars parked on snow emergency streets are subject to tow.

The city is encouraging residents on side streets — even those not under the ban — to move their vehicles to help plow drivers clear roads curb-to-curb. Free parking is available at any city-owned lot. Once the ban lifts, public parking will be available downtown, along Wellington Avenue and Broadway.

“Moving cars off narrow roadways helps allow our plow and loader operators remove snow as quickly and efficiently as possible,” the city said.

Once residents do shovel, the city asks that sidewalks are passable and treated for ice to keep pedestrians safe.
