A Newport housing advocate who has spent decades fighting for underserved families received a new roof Tuesday through a partnership between local and national organizations.

Pauline Perkins-Moye, 86, affectionately known as “Ms. Pauline,” had the roof and skylights at her Burnside Avenue residence replaced by Middletown-based A1 Roofing & Construction in collaboration with GAF, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer.

The Newport County Board of Realtors’ Charities Committee, which helps families in need of emergency home repairs, approached A1 Roofing to lead the project after learning Perkins-Moye’s roof was deteriorating.

Perkins-Moye has dedicated her life to advocating for housing equity, home safety and combating food insecurity among underserved populations in Newport.

“This project was extremely special to us because we can’t think of anyone in Newport more deserving of a new roof than Ms. Pauline,” said Sean Napolitano, president and owner of A1 Roofing. “Ms. Pauline is a cherished member of the community through the innumerable ways that she has touched so many in the area.”

Perkins-Moye praised the work crew’s efficiency.

“I was shocked and impressed with the A1 team — they came at 7 a.m. and were finishing up by the time I got home at 6 p.m.,” she said. “Since the installation everything has been amazing. I always say waking up every day is a blessing, but getting this new roof really has been an added bonus.”

Jeff Terry, vice president of corporate social responsibility and sustainability at GAF, said Perkins-Moye can now feel confident in her home.
