The Portsmouth High School football team delivered a commanding homecoming performance Friday afternoon, shutting out Chariho 41-0 at home on Saturday.
The Patriots (now 7-2) built an insurmountable 34-0 halftime lead and never looked back in the dominant Division II victory.
Senior Luke Brandariz ignited the Portsmouth offense with the game’s first touchdown, a 3-yard run in the opening quarter that set the tone for the 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
From there, the Patriots’ rushing attack proved unstoppable. Senior Jackson Hackley and brothers Jack and Joe Sanderson each contributed two touchdowns to pace Portsmouth’s balanced ground game.
Hackley found the end zone on runs of 9 and 32 yards in the first half, while the Sanderson brothers combined for four more scores. Jack Sanderson added touchdown runs of 4 and 11 yards, and Joe Sanderson punched in scores from 4 and 21 yards out.
The Portsmouth defense was equally impressive, pitching a shutout and limiting Chariho’s offensive opportunities throughout the contest.
The festive homecoming atmosphere featured a parade and halftime ceremonies celebrating the Portsmouth community.
The win keeps the Patriots’ playoff hopes alive as the regular season winds down.
