Newport Police Department, Newport, RI

A 21-year-old Newport man has been charged with multiple felonies in connection with a domestic assault Friday that left a victim in critical condition, police said Saturday.

Preston Schuster of Newport was charged with two counts of felony domestic assault, felony possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and two counts of domestic disorderly conduct, according to Lt. Joseph C. Carroll.

Schuster was arraigned at the Newport Police Station by a justice of the peace and was unable to post $100,000 bail. He was transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions and is scheduled to be arraigned in Newport District Court on Oct. 14.

Newport police detectives conducted an investigation following the Friday morning incident at 24 Carey Street, Carroll said.

Officers responded to the address at about 11:30 a.m. Friday for a report of a possible assault. When officers arrived, they found a 21-year-old victim who required immediate medical attention.

The Newport Fire Department transported the victim to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. The victim remains in critical condition.

Police said the incident was isolated and there was no threat to public safety.
