A Freeze Watch has been issued for Newport County (via NWS)

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for Newport County and surrounding areas in effect from Thursday evening through Friday morning, warning that temperatures could drop as low as 29 degrees.

The watch, issued at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, covers Newport County as well as Providence County, Kent County, Bristol County, Washington County and Dukes County in Massachusetts. The freeze watch will be in effect from late Thursday evening through Friday morning.

According to the NWS, sub-freezing temperatures could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. The lowest temperatures are expected in areas away from the immediate coastline.

Cities and towns affected include Newport, Providence, Warwick, Coventry, Foster, East Greenwich, West Greenwich, West Warwick, Smithfield, Narragansett, Bristol, Westerly and Vineyard Haven.

The National Weather Service is advising residents to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

A freeze watch is issued when conditions are favorable for sub-freezing temperatures that could damage or kill plants and vegetation.
