Puddingstone Music will launch a new concert series this fall combining jazz performances with Shakespeare readings, the organization announced Thursday.
The “Jazz and Shakespeare” series will feature two performances at Newport venues, blending live music with dramatic readings of the playwright’s monologues and sonnets.
The series opens Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. at Provence Sur Mer with pianist Randy Ingram and vocalist Aubrey Johnson performing selections from their 2022 album “Play Favorites.” Between musical sets, Trinity Rep veteran Jay Bragan will present readings from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and share commentary on Shakespeare’s relationship with music.
The second performance is scheduled for Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Rough Point, featuring trombonist Nick Finzer and his quartet. DownBeat Magazine has recognized Finzer as a “rising star in jazz.” Bragan will return with a guest actor to present Shakespeare selections designed to complement the evening’s musical program.
Both events will include food and refreshments in the ticket price.
“This fusion of improvisation, drama, and world-class musicianship promises an experience unlike anything Puddingstone has presented before,” according to the announcement.
Advance tickets are available at PuddingstoneMusic.org.
Puddingstone Music regularly presents concerts and educational programming in Newport and surrounding areas.
