IYRS School of Technology & Trades

The IYRS School of Technology & Trades received two national honors from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges, the school announced in a press release Monday.

The Newport-based trade school earned the 2025 ACCSC Commitment to Student Success Award, the commission’s highest institutional recognition, according to the announcement. Additionally, Athena Vieira, a 2024 graduate of the school’s Marine Systems program, was named a 2025 ACCSC Outstanding Graduate.

The institutional award recognizes schools that demonstrate comprehensive, student-centered educational approaches, the school said. IYRS achieved an 83% graduation rate and 87% graduate employment rate, according to the press release.

“At IYRS, student success isn’t an outcome—it’s our mission,” said Jen Iacovelli, director of student services.

The school’s recognition stems from several key initiatives, including embedded industry externships in all programs, a network of more than 500 employers who inform curriculum design, and comprehensive student support services including housing assistance and mental health partnerships, according to the announcement.

Vieira, a Rhode Island native, currently serves as chief engineer for The Boat Company in Southeast Alaska, the school said. She holds dual degrees in marine affairs and political science from the University of Rhode Island and has published research on coastal hazards and U.S. shipyards, according to the press release.

Her maritime experience includes a transatlantic passage with 59° North Sailing, where she served as an apprentice and educator, and previous roles teaching sailing and wooden boat restoration through the Herreshoff Marine Museum and Bristol Boat Company, the school announced.

“Athena’s story is a powerful example of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity,” said IYRS President Kern Maass. “She represents the very best of what IYRS stands for—curiosity, risk taking, and excellence.”

Maass and Vieira will receive the awards at the 2025 ACCSC Professional Development Conference, scheduled for Sept. 15-17 in Arlington, Virginia, according to the press release.

IYRS is a nonprofit postsecondary school offering hands-on training in boatbuilding and restoration, composites technology, digital modeling and fabrication, and marine systems. The school prepares students for careers through industry-informed curricula and real-world experience.
