A documentary examining innovative approaches to American education will have its world premiere Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. at Salve Regina University through newportFILM.
“Multiple Choice,” produced by Ted Dintersmith, follows students and teachers at the Emil & Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center in Winchester, Virginia. The program integrates career-based learning with traditional academics in fields including carpentry, welding, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
The 75-minute film will screen at Bazarsky Lecture Hall in the O’Hare Academic Center at 36 Ochre Point Ave. Tickets cost $15.
“Every student deserves the opportunity to realize their full potential,” said Dintersmith. “Over the past decade, I’ve visited hundreds of schools nationwide and was blown away by Winchester’s model — education at its very best.”
The film addresses what organizers call America’s “college-for-all agenda” that creates limited choices for high school graduates: college with its risks and expenses, or low-wage employment.
Director Charles Haine said the Winchester model shows career-based learning not as a last resort but as foundational education where students explore careers, collaborate and master both traditional and new-economy skills.
A panel discussion at 8:15 p.m. will feature Dintersmith, Haine, Winchester Public Schools Superintendent Jason Van Heukelum, educational advocate Tony Wagner and Innovation Center student Luis Daniel Marquez-Cardoso.
“Multiple Choice raises urgent questions and sparks a much-needed conversation about how we prepare students, and how American education must evolve,” said newportFILM Executive Director Cathleen Carr.
Charter Books will host a pop-up bookstore where attendees can purchase signed copies of Wagner’s book “Mastery: Why Deeper Learning Is Essential in an Age of Distraction.”
The venue opens at 6 p.m. Free street parking is available and the venue is wheelchair accessible.
The screening is a partnership with newportFILM with support from BankNewport and Discover Newport.
