Shattered Ice (via The JPT Film & Event Center)

On Friday, Aug. 15, Newport’s historic The JPT Film & Event Center will host the Rhode Island premiere of Shattered Ice. This award-winning narrative feature has been gaining national attention on the film festival circuit. Presented in collaboration with Newport-based mental health advocacy brand NOSOLO, the evening will blend powerful storytelling with a shared commitment to breaking the stigma around mental health.

Written by first-time screenwriter Jake Miskin and directed by Alex Ranarivelo, Shattered Ice tells the story of Will Mankus (Charlie Gillespie), a high school hockey player whose world is upended when his best friend, Danny Campbell (Sterling Beaumon), dies by suicide. Set in a small Massachusetts town, the film explores the ways grief can ripple through a community, and the strength that comes from connection, compassion, and vulnerability (particularly in a sports culture) that often prioritizes toughness over openness.

For Miskin, the Rhode Island premiere is about more than showing a film; it’s about creating a space for dialogue and togetherness. “I’ve followed JT and NOSOLO for a few years now and I love their passion and unique way of building a community and spreading awareness about suicide and mental health,” he said. “They were the perfect partner to bring Shattered Ice to Rhode Island for our premiere. The film has already made a significant impact on audiences nationwide, earning “Most Impactful Film” at the Sedona International Film Festival, “Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature” at the Berkshire International Film Festival, and both “Audience Award – Feature Narrative” and “Best Performance for Ensemble” at the Woods Hole Film Festival. Each screening has reinforced the film’s mission: to open up honest conversations about mental health and remind people that they are not alone.

The Newport event begins with doors opening at 6:00 PM, followed by the 7:00 PM screening. A special panel discussion with members of the cast, crew, and mental health advocates will take place after the film, offering the community a chance to connect, reflect, and share. Limited-edition NOSOLO x Shattered Ice merchandise will be available exclusively at the premiere.
